Brought to life back in 2003, Critical Mass began as a group of Diablo Canyon musicians, many of whom performed regularly in musical theater, worship groups and other local bands. The idea was to provide entertainment for their co-workers during special events at the power plant. After a few events, however, word got out about their talent and diverse repertoire and pretty soon they were playing for charities, weddings, reunions and public events. Over time, participation in the enterprise opened up to retirees, family members and friends.
Critical Mass is now a local favorite at venues like the Sizzling Summer Concerts and Santa Workshop in Grover Beach, Branch Street Deli in Arroyo Grande, The Shell Café in Pismo Beach, many of the local fraternal organizations as well as wineries from Santa Ynez to Paso Robles. Because this is a “side gig” for most of the members, it is a labor of love which is evident in their stage energy and comradery.
Rock and country, oldies and contemporary, big band and ballad – Critical Mass has something for anyone and a whole lot of fun for everyone.
