Songwriters at Play
Songwriters At Play founder Steve Key has a goal for his 60th birthday — to hear 60 of his songs performed. It will take two 3-hour shows to cover them all, starting with an afternoon show at Sculpterra Winery. The evening concert at D’Anbino starts at 7pm features Ben Davis (formerly of Unfinished Business), Bob & Wendy (Shadowlands), Craig Louis Dingman (Code Blues), Ken McMeans (Stereo Chickens), Chris Beland, Holly Ann Lewis, Ynana Rose, Donna Phillips, John Roy Zat, Bruce Goldish, Nick Brittan, and Aaron Porter.
The birthday boy will close out the show, accompanied by guitarist Dorian Michael, and Ken Hustad on bass. Steve was born in Brooklyn, NY, on October 8, 1957, the day the Dodgers left Brooklyn for L.A. His family moved to California, in the Bay Area, so Steve grew up cheering the Giants and the A’s. He learned guitar at Boy Scout camp, went on to write songs in college, played his first paying gig at The Wine Cellar in Los Gatos fall 1977. He moved back to New York in his late 20s, recording for the Fast Folk label, which is now part of the Smithsonian. His song “Record Time (33, 45, 78) was recorded by country music star Kathy Mattea.
